Eye Strain Causes

If you have ever suffered from sore or tired eyes, a headache, a sore neck, or blurred vision from staring at a computer screen or monitor for long periods of time, then you most likely have had eye strain in some form. Eye strain is a surprisingly common problem affecting millions of people every day. It is most common when you are concentrating on a certain task for a long period of time, such as when you are driving, reading or using a monitor.

The best defense against eye strain is understanding what causes eye strain. Once you understand what causes eye strain, you can work on planning ways to prevent this problem in the future.

Reliance on Computers- Eye Strain Causes

The most common reason in today’s day and age for eye strain is our reliance on computers. These devices have revolutionized the way in which we do business and brought our world closer than ever; however, they have also caused eye strain in the process. In fact, the number one complaint among office workers is eye strain due to their laptops or desktop machines. Staring at a either of these day in and day out can cause your eyes to become overworked and overtired, especially when you take into consideration the ergonomics, the bright lights of your surroundings and the glare given off.

To avoid this common everyday problem ask your optometrist about eye exercises, to ease the strain on your eyes. You may be able to wear corrective lenses to prevent the discomfort or eye drops to stop the itchy dry sensation. Another option is to take a break every five minutes and focus your eyes on another task that does not involve the screen.

Lights-Eye Strain Causes

Another common reason for eye strain is due to the lighting system in your office or workplace. If you work outdoors, then eye strain can especially be a problem on bright summer days. Make sure you wear sunglasses that offer as much protection as possible, even if they are a little on the expensive side.

If you work inside, adjust the brightness of your office and desktop or laptop screen to get rid of any glare. Dim the lights on your monitor or position a light away from the screen to stop yourself being dazzled.

Another issue can be with very dim light which can also cause your eyes to strain. When reading or driving at night, this can be a common problem. Make sure, when driving you use your high beams whenever it is safe and no oncoming traffic is near you. Also, when reading at night, use a bright nightlight positioned behind you to light up the book sentences better and avoid eye straining.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to the causes of eye strain is that eye strain is your body’s way of telling you that your eyes are tired. Give them the rest they deserve so they can refocus on the tasks at hand.
